F2 to F1  =  Force on extension
F3 to F4  =  Force on compression

A coil spring is placed between the piston and the bottom of the tube.  The unit is filled with oil and sealed.  Metered and timed extension and forces are achieved through fixed or adjustable piston orifices and selected coil spring forces.
